I have been passionate about Family history since the late 1980s due to not knowing who my grandparents were. In those days there was no internet, and all family history records were kept in Libraries and Record Offices.
I spent as much time as I could looking through old newspapers, directories, and any other documents I could lay my hands on.
Thanks to the internet, that is no longer the case, we can do that from almost anywhere. Many things have been digitized and made it possible for us to obtain information online, it has made family history research so much easier.
Don’t get me wrong, it can still be a struggle as not everything is available, not all records exist, some have been destroyed by fire, some lost, and some for other reasons. Births marriages and deaths go back to 1837, but beyond that, it is parish records, some can be very sketchy.
One thing to be aware of is that the information is only as good as the person who wrote it, people were known to tell little lies about their age, maybe they forgot how old they were the older they got, or they needed to be older or younger than they were. All the information we gather must be backed up by proof, which is why it takes time.
I have researched my family history and found many things that I would never have known, from families emigrating to America, and Australia, to someone secretly having two of her six children adopted.
There are so many stories I have uncovered over time, and I am still finding them, there is always something to discover.
